Jahreszeiten Terrace |
Since April 2006 the City of Hamburg has one attraction more. The Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten has opened its Jahreszeiten Terrace directly located on the Inner Alster Lake. Ingo C. Peters, managing director is happy about this event: "Our new terrace is a long-time dream come true. We have four excellent restaurants in the hotel, however, an open-air restaurant has always been missing." Since its foundation in 1897, the hotel has developed from several surrounding individual buildings and the architecture has not permitted an expansion for an open-air café or something similar. Since Ingo C. Peters took over the management of the hotel in 1997, he has toyed with the idea of opening a café on the Alster. The redesign of the Jungfernstieg offered the ideal opportunity to expand the gastronomic profile of the grand hotel. During the course of the construction work on the Jungfernstieg, the Alstertouristik GmbH (ATG) relocated their berth for the Alster steam ship and had a new pier constructed (30 meters long and six meters wide) for passengers to embark and disembark, which is located right in front of the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Jens Wrage, managing director of ATG was enthusiastic about the idea of developing an open-air café, which would make the Alster more attractive to the citizens of Hamburg and tourists alike. Under the direction of architect, Tillmann Wagenknecht, a charming open-air café has arisen on the berth of the Alster ships, which will be managed by the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten under the name of "Jahreszeiten Terrace". The style and design of the terrace blends with the redesign of the Jungfernstieg. Bright colours harmonised with light woods and stainless steel, dominate the furnishings of the terrace. The panelling of the show kitchen and an elegantly curved bench to resemble a hull are all made from the finest mahogany. The terrace design is in harmony with the overall picture of the Binnenalster. The terrace offers seating for 80 guests and will be open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. When temperatures are cooler, external radiators shall provide pleasant warmth and a cosy place to sit and enjoy first-class food and excellent service. The menu includes a terrace breakfast, which will be served from 10.00 a.m. to noon. From noon to 10.00 p.m. the terrace kitchen will spoil guests with small snacks and selected dishes, which reflect the gastronomic diversity of the hotel. Fresh salads and specialities from the rotisserie bear the signature of the restaurant Jahreszeiten Grill. Satay skewers, Singapore fried noodles or Asian vegetables prepared in the wok reflect the Euro-Asian restaurant Doc Cheng's®. The afternoon is dedicated to the Café Condi and the hotel's patisserie when guests can enjoy a wide variety of freshly made cakes, gateau and pastries as well as exquisite ice specialties. The list of beverages also promises diversity - nice cool drinks during hot temperatures and hot drinks to warm oneself up during Hamburg's colder seasons. The Jahreszeiten Terrace will be an added attraction to the city centre of Hamburg. Heinrich Heine enjoyed the charm of the picturesque Binnenalster and many times he sat in the Alsterpavillon. Heine wrote about the Binnenalster in his "Memoirs of the Lords of Schnabelewopski": "It was a nice place to sit and there I sat on many a summer afternoon, thinking about the thoughts of young people, namely nothing and observing what they observe, namely the young girls passing by". If the Jahreszeiten Terrace had been there at that time - Heinrich Heine would certainly have sat here.
